Fundamentalism played a major role in the United States in the
1920’s. During this time, putting science and secular values over religion was
becoming increasingly popular in what was known as modernism. Fundamentalism was
the reasserted belief in the basics of religion, which put emphasis on literal
interpretations on the bible. Religious fundamentalists wanted to ensure that
religion stayed at the center of the United States. A famous court trial
regarding fundamentalism in the 1920’s is the Scopes Trial. This trial was due
to a law in Tennessee that prohibited the theory of evolution from being taught
in schools. A biology teacher was arrested for teaching the evolution theory,
and was eventually tried in the Supreme Court. It was found that John Scopes,
the biology teacher who taught the evolution theory, was guilty of committing a
crime.
